Assignment 5:  Defending a Position Paper (Note:   Use MLA Format)

Research {3-5 sources} Portion Due:                      Tuesday 23 October 2007 

First Draft Due:                                            Tuesday 30 October 2007

Final Due:                                                      Tuesday 6 November 2007

Consider a controversial issue for this position paper. Ultimately, what you will do in stages is, first, research the issue using the MMA Sails Network or the LexusNexus Database file. You will then write the essay using the following format:

• Introduction:  This is where you state the issue, state the controversy, and define both sides of the controversy.
• Body: This is where you will bring in the reseach materials and offer an in-depth discussion of first one then the other side of the issue using facts, supporting evidence, statistics, or any other non-biased information you are able to find on this topic.
• Conclusion:  This is where you wrap up your observations of both sides and determine which side, in your opinion, had the strongest support for their position. If you do this successfully, your reader will have no alternative but to agree with you.

Note: Include a Works Cited page at the end of the paper citing the sources you were able to find that helped you better understand the controversy in this issue.

Note:  Word of Caution!!   Avoide qualitative words like should, good, bad, right, wrong.
