1. Assignment: Analysis of symbolism in one story or play. How do symbols communicate the story or play’s thematic analysis of family and identity?

2. Stories/play to use:

·        “The Storm”

·        “Too Much His Father’s Son”

·        “Separating”

·        ”On Tidy Endings”

·        “Hills Like White Elephants”

“3. Writing process:

            1. Review symbol information (handout)

            2. Review sample essay (handout)

            3. List all recurrent images (sights, sounds, tastes, touches, motions, etc.) in the work under consideration.

4. Determine the warrant: What is the writer’s attitude and underlying assumptions about the topic?

5. Create a thesis/claim by showing how related images gather symbolic meaning in support of the theme.

6. Clearly relate each symbol or groups of symbols to your thesis/claim in your topic sentences.
