Comp I: Defend Your Future
Bristol Community College
ENG 11/CSS 11 Instructor:
J. Thomas Grady
Choose from one of the strategies
below:
- Create an argument which
persuades the reader that your future career is the one for you. This
essay will give you the opportunity to discuss a career goal, either a
dream job or an actual choice, and develop it in great detail. You will
demonstrate your ability to defend
yourself using a thesis and then illustrate all aspects of your
thesis by use of examples.
- Describe an experience (from
any time in your life) that made you realize what your future career
should be. This essay should
follow a narrative structure, so you may consider this topic if you enjoy
more personal, descriptive writing.
- Write a dragon essay in
which you describe a dream career, the obstacles in your way, and how
you’ll overcome (slay) them or compromise.
Use the writing process however
it works for you, but you must pass in your prewriting with your essay.
- Don’t put this off. Give yourself time between the steps of the writing
process to nail your objectives.
- Make sure you link your
ideas to the thesis.
- This essay uses examples
from your experience, not from secondary sources. Do not conduct
research.
- Refer to the textbook for
what’s expected from the elements of narrative or example.
- All elements should flow
together, like natural speech (transitions from intro to body to
conclusion)
